What A Girl Wants: Shoe Edition

What A Girl Wants: Shoe Edition

I spent $35.99 on a pair of  shoes today. I haven’t spent that much on shoes in a very long time.

Maybe I really have embraced the frugal, living-on-one-income lifestyle that we have, but I haven’t even missed it. So it was especially strange to spend $35.99 on a pair of shoes that were not for me.

The shoes are for Elizabeth.

Yes. We bought princess crocs. This surprised me on so many levels, including:

1) We usually don’t buy branded things. We don’t buy things with logos or cartoons on it (all things we have like that were gifts or free from a clothing swap).

2) I almost never even buy Elizabeth shoes. Between my very generous mother who has become Elizabeth’s shoe fairy, to my local mom’s group clothing swap, I have gotten away with maybe buying one pair of shoes (resale) and one pair of rain boots (cheap) in the past year for her.

So why did I give in and buy it?  Because Elizabeth fell completely in love with them.

She had already tried on hot pink ones and decided she must have them (throwing them into the cart) and then she discovered these and would not take them off. She walked around the store with them on and we had to hand the cashier the tags and let her wear them out.

I think I bought them because I want her to have things she loves (instead of tons of things). I am so happy she has been showing a preference. She is usually a very easy to please child and is happy with whatever (though admittedly, pink is the preference). It is so neat to see her express her own strong opinions.

Her love of them has been quite a sight to behold. She has worn them the entire day (excepting the hour we had rest time and she failed to fall asleep).

I don’t even regret buying the hot pink ones, too (though at least it was buy one, get one half off).

If she loves them this much we should get our money’s worth out of them. At least, I hope so. I also think I can take more princesses if it makes my little girl this happy.

The Calm Before The (Snow) Storm

The Calm Before The (Snow) Storm

It has been really cold here lately and we are supposed to get our first snow of the season this weekend (it won’t really be a storm, but I am hoping for enough to make some snowballs).

Elizabeth and I spent the day in preparation by going to the gym, grocery shopping, and baking chocolate chip cookies.

She really loves the child size shopping carts at our favorite store.  She was all cute and joyful until I took out the camera.

I think she was staring me down for wasting time when we could be putting things in her cart. She really has shopping down and has no problem telling me to put the heavy things in my cart. There is no slowing her down.

When we were driving out of the grocery store parking lot we had this conversation:

Me:  We are going to go home and make cookies. Does that sound good?

Elizabeth: I want to go home and eat cookies.

Me: We have to make them first.

Elizabeth: No, I want to go home and eat cookies RIGHT NOW.

Sometimes she is very much my daughter.

She became much more accepting and cheerful when it came time to actually make them.

She helps me every time I’m in the kitchen. Her definition of help is very broad. It apparently involves dropping the beaters on the floor a few times and the need to smell every ingredient.

She even helped herself to some sugar and butter. I think she would have started licking it if I let her.

Now that we have cookies we are ready for anything.

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!

Thrift Store Joy

Thrift Store Joy

Victory at Goodwill today! The long searched for shelf/cabinet/something for the half bathroom has been found in this:

And it was 50% off and ended up only being $7.49.  And it is natural wood that I will be able to paint a fresh coat of white on very nicely.  The only problem is there are no shelves. So off I went to the hardware store and I got a piece of pine to cut down into shelves.

An additional find (imminent project/distraction) was this picture frame:

It is really horrendous, but the texture is amazing and it is such a nice big size. I spray painted it black within the first 30 minutes of owning it and wonderful husband agrees it looks pretty good.

I originally thought the brown mat would be usable, but it sadly was attached to the black and white one and when I went to cut it apart with a knife I cut into the brown (probably not the recommended way to cut a photo mat). I would be sad, but I really prefer a white mat for it anyway so I will have to get one soon.
