We’ve Been Living in a Cave

We’ve Been Living in a Cave

We have been hiding out this week. Spending a lot of time hanging out at home. Twice we have spent the whole day in pajamas (except Duncan, who sadly had to go to work).

The additional crummy weather and snow has left me wanting to hibernate and read (three books down so far this week!).

Elizabeth is loving the couch cushion fort we built (she often calls it a cave or a tent, too). It took us a while to come up with a workable model. We were originally using a tiny bookshelf until it got knocked over one too many times and broke. Ooops.

The only time we ventured out today was to check out the snow this morning (still in our pjs under the warmer clothes).

As much as I love snow and seeing how much Elizabeth loves snow, I am definitely dreaming about spring.

It’s Snowing! Let’s Play in the Sandbox!

It’s Snowing! Let’s Play in the Sandbox!

We have been having a resurgence of winter weather here lately.

We even started our day off with snow.

I had been so proud of these early tulips coming up; now I am worried for them. Snow in March?

On my way home from the gym this morning, there were big fluffy flakes sticking to everything. I started daydreaming about cuddling up with Elizabeth and books by the fire (while drinking cups of hot chocolate, of course). Maybe I am already having winter nostalgia (what a crazy thought).

Then reality started to intrude on my perfect snow day plans.

First the rain came, and most of the snow melted away pretty quickly.

Second, Elizabeth started begging to go play outside. In the rain and what was left of the snow. She has alternated playing in her sandbox (on the covered patio) with playing dollhouse (with me in the living room). She comes in when her hands are too cold and goes out again when she warms up again. This has been going on for a couple hours. She thinks it is the best idea ever.

I, however, was feeling  too cold to go out. Today, I have been once again thankful that the sandbox is right outside the living room window and I can easily see her playing. With the door open a crack, I can also hear her whenever she needs me.

Elizabeth was annoyed to catch me taking her picture. Mao was annoyed I wouldn't let him play in the sandbox with Elizabeth.

The fact that she is willing to play in the backyard without me makes me want to do a happy dance.

We can be a little co-dependent.  Independent play has only recently been a really successful thing in our house (especially independent play longer than 15-20 minutes). This is such an awesome step.

Snow!

Snow!

We woke up today to a nice little snow fall. Elizabeth immediately (and willingly) offered to get dressed to go out in it.

She was even willing to wear her gloves.

There was definitely enough snow to play in. We tried to get her to make snowballs, but she wasn’t that into it. Walking and stomping in snow seemed to be the most popular.

Then we made Elizabeth her very first snowman. She was adamant we had to go in and get a carrot for its nose. She was completely right. The carrot made the snowman. Elizabeth got to munch on the other half of the carrot.

Sadly, the snow has already started to melt. Our snowman has already fallen over and gotten a (severe) head injury.

At least it was fun for a few hours.
